[1]Possibly because of Einstein’s strong statements in his letter of two weeks earlier (see Vol. 8,
Doc. 349a, in the present volume).
[2]Mileva Einstein-Maric;’s apartment was empty while she was hospitalized in the Bethanienheim
hospital. Eduard Einstein was in Arosa and Hans Albert was living with the Zanggers.
[3]Einstein considered the children’s sanatorium that Zangger had proposed too expensive (see
Vol. 8, Doc. 349a, in the present volume).

Greeks to the modern era, arguing that the rediscovery of Mendelian genetics and the work of August
Weismann confirmed Aristotle’s critique of the inheritance of acquired characteristics.

Vol. 8, 357a. To Heinrich Zangger
[Berlin,] 24. VI. 17
Lieber Freund Zangger!
Albert[5]
von Ihrem
A. Einstein.

[2]He lectured on the theory of relativity at the University of Berlin (see Einstein to Paul Ehrenfest,
22 July 1917 [Vol. 8, Doc. 362], note 3).
[3]On 30 June, he delivered a lecture in Frankfurt at the Physikalischer Verein on the principle of
relativity (see Max von Laue to Einstein, 25 June 1917 [Vol. 8, Doc. 358], note 2).
[4]Pauline Einstein lived in Heilbronn.
[5]Hans Albert Einstein was staying with Zangger and his wife, Mathilde Zangger-Mayenfisch.
