[5]Other pacifists during World War I also contemplated forming an international body similar to
the League of Nations (see, e.g., Fried 1918).
[6]Einstein had been on vacation in Switzerland, moving between Zurich, Lucerne, and Arosa,
since late June (see Vol. 8, Docs. 360b and 361a, in the present volume).

less expensive boardinghouse run by Lydia Stahel, see Vol. 8, Doc. 364c, notes 9 and 10, in the present

Vol. 8, 373a. To Elsa Einstein
[Lucerne,] Mittwoch. [22 August 1917]
Liebe Else!
Gottlob, dass Ilse nun wieder flügge ist. Hoffentlich sind die beiden endlich aus-
geflogen.[1]
Ich lasse also meinen Pass verfallen und bleibe im September noch
hier, Deinen kühnen Entschluss mit Freude
begrüssend.[2]
Um den 1. September
werden wirs in Mamas Weise
versuchen.[3]
Der sonderbare Brief des Stuttgarter
Arztes hat mich sehr ergötzt. Was er Sachliches bringt, ist natürlich ächter Medizi-
ner-Quatsch.[4]
Neulich erkältete ich mich in
Weggis[5]
gress, wo Hilbert
vorträgt.[10]
AKS. [143 061]. The verso is addressed “Frau Elsa Einstein Haberlandstr. 5 Berlin W.,” with return
address “Abs. A. Einstein Brambergstr. 16A Luzern.,” and postmarked “Luzern 1 Briefversd 22.VIII
1917 5–6.”
[1]Ilse and her grandmother had been planning a trip since the end of July (see Vol. 8, Doc. 367a,
in the present volume).
[2]Most likely a reference to Einstein’s previous plans for a rendezvous with Elsa in Germany (see
Vol. 8, Doc. 370b, in the present volume).
[3]Pauline Einstein, who was vacationing with her brother in Weggis, Switzerland (see Vol. 8,
Doc. 365a, in the present volume).
[4]A possible reference to Einstein’s ongoing gastric problems (see Vol. 8, Doc. 359a, in the present
volume). The doctor in Stuttgart may have been Ernst Levi (see Doc. 154).
[5]While visiting Einstein’s mother and uncle, who were vacationing there (see note 3).
[6]Possibly a reference to his ironic greetings in the postscript to Vol. 8, Doc. 371a, in the present
volume.
