Mit achtungsvollstem Gruss Ihr P. Gruner ALS. [11 391]. [1]Gruner first published his work on electron theory of metals as Gruner 1908. A revised version, in which Einstein is thanked for his critical remarks, is Gruner 1909, which is dated 7 December 1908. [2]In Gruner 1908 (as well as in Gruner 1909) the presence of neutral metal atoms is sup- posed as well. The main difference between the two versions is that the second simplifies some of the assumptions from the first one on the collision mechanism between electrons and metal molecules. In addition to colliding with the charged molecules in the fashion sketched below, the electrons are supposed to collide elastically with the neutral molecules. See Seeliger 1922 for a review of electron theories of metals, including a discussion of Gruner's work (p. 802). [3]See Lorentz 1905. The expression below represents the distribution function for the elec- trons under the assumption that there are only inhomogeneities in the x-direction and that the electron gas is close to equilibrium h stands for m/kT (with m the electron mass), Ģ is the x-component of the electron velocity, and A is a function of x only. [4]X is the acceleration due to an external force in the x-direction. 128. From Alfred Bucherer Bonn, Nov. 26ten 1908. Sehr verehrter Herr College!
