einfältig;
das sehe ich
jetzt
ein. Der Wunsch
war
stärker als die
Überlegung.
Ich
würde
so
gerne
etwas thun,
um
die
Kollegen aus
der
verschiedenen Vaterländern
zusammenzuhalten.[2] Ist
nicht
das Häuflein
emsiger
Denkmenschen
unser
einzi-
ges
"Vaterland“,
für das
unsereiner
etwas
ernsthaftes
übrig
hat? Sollen auch diese
Menschen
Gesinnungen
haben,
die
alleinige
Funktion
des
Wohnortes
sind?
Für
Nordstrom[3]
sende ich zwei
Separata. Sagen
Sie
ihm
doch,
dass das
"Tol-
man’sche
Prinzip“
nichts
ist als das
Verlangen
der
Kovarianz
gegenüber
Aehnlich-
keitstransformationen, d. h.
gegenüber
einer
ganz speziellen
Art
von
linearen
Transformationen,[4]
und
dass
er
mit Unrecht
behauptet,
meine Theorie
entspreche
dem
nicht;[5]
letztere wahrt
ja
die Kovarianz
beliebiger
linearer Transformationen.
Teilen Sie ihm auch
mit,
dass
er an
zweiter Stelle
an
der Berliner Universität
zum
Extraordinarius
vorgeschlagen
war;
dies
war
ein
Zeichen der
gerechten
Gesinnung
Plancks.[6]
Ich reise Ende dieser
Woche für etwa
3 Wochen nach
der
Schweiz. Dann ist
vor-
läufig ausgereist.
Ich
werde
Sie aber
gerne
ein andermal
heimsuchen,
womöglich
mit
meinem
Albert.[7]
Herzliche Grüsse
an
Sie alle
von
Ihrem
Einstein.

1915,
which
gives a simple
derivation,
based
on
kinetic
theory,
of
the law
of

for

[2]Einstein had
proposed an
informal
meeting
of
European colleagues
(see
Doc.
98),
which H. A.
Lorentz
rejected (see
Doc.
103).
[3]Gunnar Nordstrom
(1881-1923),
Privatdozent in Theoretical
Physics
at the
University
of
Helsingfors (Helsinki), was working
with Ehrenfest in
Leyden on a
three-year
fellowship
and
living
in
his home
(see
lsaksson
1985,
p. 47).
Nordstrom had
developed a special
relativistic
theory
of
gravitation (Nordstrom
1912, 1913a,
1913b),
which is the
only theory
besides the “Entwurf”
theory
that
is
discussed
at
length
in Einstein’s lecture
on
the current state
of
the
problem
of
gravitation
in late
1913
(Einstein
1913c
[Vol.
4,
Doc.
17]).
For historical discussion
of
Nordstrom’s
theory,
see
lsaksson
1985 and Norton
1992b.
[4]Richard Tolman’s
“principle
of
similitude” states: “The fundamental entities
out
of
which the
physical
universe is
constructed
are
of
such
a
nature that
from
them
a
miniature universe could be
constructed
exactly
similar in
every respect
to
the
present
universe.” See
Tolman
1914,
p.
244.
[5]See
Nordstrom
1915,
p.
10,
for his assertion.
[6]In
November
1914,
Max
Planck
recommended
Richard
Gans (1880-1954)
and
Nordstrom
after
Max Born (1882-1970), the first
choice,
for
a position as
Extraordinary
Professor
at
the
University
of
Berlin
(see
Max Planck to
Spectabilis
[Dean],
Philosophical Faculty,
22 November
1914, GyBHU,
Philosophische
Fakultät, Dekanat,
Nr.
1467,
pp.
14-15).
Nominally a
Russian
subject,
Nordstrom
could
scarcely
have
accepted a
call
to
Berlin
during
the
war
(see
lsaksson
1985,
p.
47). Born,
a
Privatdozent in Theoretical
Physics
at
the
University
of
Göttingen, was appointed
in
January
1915.
[7]Hans
Albert
was a special
favorite
of
Ehrenfest
(see
Einstein
to
Paul
Ehrenfest, 19
March
1914
[Vol.
5,
Doc.
515],
note
4).
