DOCUMENT 337 MAY

ALS.

[1]Einstein
had,
in this
letter, presumably
commented
on
the
manuscript sent
to him
by
Adler
on
23
April
(see
Doc.
329).
For the
gist
of
Einstein’s
opinion, see
Doc. 331.
[2]Adler
was
making
preparations
for
his
murder
trial,
which
was
eleven
days
off
(see
Doc.
307,
note
9).
[3]Gustav
Ludwig
Lange
(1863-1936),
an
independent
scholar in
physics
and
psychology,
had
ear-
lier
been
an
Assistent
at
the Institute
of
Experimental Psychology
of
the
University
of
Leipzig.
In his
critique
of
the
concept
of
motion,
Lange
took
a strong
relativist
point
of
view, rejecting
the distinction
between real and
imaginary
motion
(even
for accelerated
motions)
and
arguing
that all motion is
motion
of
bodies with
respect to
other bodies.
To
describe
motion,
he
introduced the
concept (and
the
term)
“inertial
system” (“Inertialsystem”)
for
a
frame of
reference in which isolated
bodies
move
along straight
lines and showed that such
systems
exist.
Applying
his ideas
to
the solar
system,
he
referred
the motion
of
the earth
to
an
inertial
system
in which the center
of
mass
of
the solar
system
is
at
“inertial rest”
(“Inertialruhe”).
He
also proposed
replacing
the
expression
“real motion”
(“wahre
Bewegung”)
of
the
planets
with
“heliocentric inertial revolution”
(“heliocentrische
Inertialdrehung”)
with
respect
to
the chosen inertial
system.
See
Lange, L. 1886,
pp.
108-141.
Presumably,
Adler’s
"Copernican
coordinate
systems"
are
related
to Lange’s
solar
system
inertial frame. In
any
case, they
are
systems
in
which
the
earth rotates
(see
Doc. 364
for
a
discussion
of
the distinction between
"Copernican"
and “Ptolemaic” coordinate
systems).
In Seeliger
1906a,
the
author
reviews the work
of
Ernst Mach and
Lange
on
motion (Mach
1904,
and
Lange,
L. 1885, 1886,
and
1902), particularly
in connection with the
problem
of
establishing
inertial
systems
to be
used
in
astronomy.

From Walther Rathenau
[Berlin,]
10/11 Mai 17.
Lieber
und
sehr verehrter Herr
Einstein,
Seit Wochen befinde ich mich
unter
der
Douche Ihrer
Gedanken;
kaum
hatte ich
den
Evangelisten
Schlick
beendet,
da
kamen
die Verba
Magistri,
die
nun vor
mir
liegen,
und für die ich Ihnen aufs
herzlichste
danke.[1]
Zunächst eine
Vorbemerkung,
die keine
Plattheit
sein soll:
der
Prophet
ist
klarer
als der
Evangelist.
Ich hätte
es
nicht für
möglich
gehalten,
eine
so
radikale
Umstel-
lung
der Gedanken mit
so
einfachen
Mitteln
und in
so
klassischer Architektonik-
ich unterstreiche das Wort klassisch im
Gegensatz
zu
Ihrem ,holprig'-zu
erzwin-
gen,
wie Sie
es
thun.[2]
Ich habe bis
S.
39
gelesen[3]
und
sage
nicht,
dass
es
mir leicht wird. Wohl
aber,-
da
alles, was
Sie
berühren,
relativ wird-relativ
leicht. Vielleicht erschwere ich
mir
die Sache
selbst,
weil alle
möglichen
Gedankenrudimente mich
von
verschiedenen
Seiten in die
Nähe
Ihres Kraftfeldes
geführt haben,
und weil ich
jetzt
die Ausstrah-
lungen
bis in
vorhandene
Denkstränge
hinein
aufnehmen und assimiliren
muss.
Soll ich
von
solchen Gedankenrudimenten Ihnen
einiges
erzählen? Es wird sich
in Ihrem Lichtkreis ausnehmen wie
armselige
entlarvte Gespenster-aber viel-
leicht kann ich Ihnen
für
meine Freude
und
Bewunderung
den skurrilen Dank ab-
statten,
dass ich Sie ein
paar
Minuten lächeln mache. Wird
mir
jetzt, gegen
Mitter-
nacht das
Zeug
noch einfallen?
Numeriren
wir,
dann wird’s
gehen.
