DOCUMENT 616 SEPTEMBER 1918 875
[1]This letter is dated
on
the
assumption
that it
was
written before
the
following
document.
[2]Meitner (1878-1968)
worked
on
contract in the
physics
section
of
the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute
of
Chemistry.
[3]Ludwig
Hopf
had worked with
Edgar Meyer
on
fluctuations in ionization
currents
in
early
1912
(see Ludwig
Hopf
to
Einstein,
20
February
1912
[Vol.
5,
Doc.
363]).
[4]In
1911, Meyer
had studied fluctuations in the ionization caused
by y-rays
from
a
radioactive
source traversing
two adjacent
ionization
chambers,
and
had
found the fluctuations to be correlated.
On the
assumption
that the ionization fluctuations reflected fluctuations in the emission
of
the
y-rays,
a possible explanation was
that
a ray
could
bring
about
more
than
one
ionization
(see Meyer,
E.
1912).
An alternative
explanation
was
that the correlations
are
due
to secondary rays (see
Einstein to Edgar
Meyer,
26
February
1911
[Vol.
5,
Doc.
256]).

the nature
of

and
y-radiation, including Meyer’s
work
on
fluctuations.

To
Lise
Meitner
[Berlin, 14
September 1918]
Liebes Frl. Meitner!
Ich habe
nun
die
Rechnung
no[c]h
einmal
exakter
durchgeführt,
und
gefunden,
dass die
Schwankungen
beider
Ionisierungen
völlig
unabhängig
sein müssen. Da-
mit
fällt
unser hoffnungsvolles
Unternehmen ins
Wasser,
abgesehen
davon,
dass
Meyers
Resultate doch entschieden
richtig gestellt
werden
müssten.[1]
Schon
vor
der
Rechnung
sah ich
so,
dass statistische
Unabhängigkeit
in solchen
Fällen
bes[te]hen
muss:
Ein Strahl S werde durch
partielle
Reflexion in zwei
gleich
[sta]rke
S1
und
S2
zerlegt.
Ich
behaupte,
die
Schwankungen
von S1
und
von
S2
müssen voneinander
unabhängig
sein. Da nämlich alle Strahlen
von
der
gleichen
Intensität
(und
Fre-
quenz)
sich statistisch
gleich
verhalten
müssen,
muss
es
auf
dasselbe hinaus-
ko[mm]en, wenn
ich
S1
mit einem
gleich
intensiven,
unabhängig erzeugten
Strahl
S1' zur
Vereinigung bringe,
wie
wenn
ich ihn
mit
S2
zur
Vereinigung bringe. [Da]s
ist
nur
dann der
Fall,
wenn
S1
&
S2
zu
einander
statistisch
unabhängig
sind.
Herzlichen Gruss Ihr
A. Einstein.

[1]See the
preceding
document
for
more on
the
planned
collaboration between
Einstein
and Meit-
ner. Presumably,
the
more precise
calculation mentioned here
concerned
correlations
between ioniza-
tions caused
by
the
same
y-ray.
The outcome that these ionizations
are
independent-contrary
to what
was
found in
Meyer,
E.
1912-implies that the
experiment proposed
in the
preceding
document
would
not
provide any
information
on
the
nature
of
the
absorption
of
y-rays.
