[1]Possibly Philipp Frank, Georg Pick, and Moritz Winternitz, whom Einstein had visited during
his recent stay in Prague (see Doc. 11).
[2]Tomás= Garrigue Masaryk (1850–1937), president of Czechoslovakia.
[3]Besides recipients of a Nobel Prize, members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and advisers
to it, members of governments, national assemblies, courts, peace organizations, heads of a university,
professors of jurisprudence, religion, history, and philosophy could submit unsolicited nominations
for the Peace Prize (see Bisceglia 1972, p. 264).
[4]For Masaryk’s efforts on behalf of Czech nationalism, see, e.g., Baer 1998, pp. 75–93. On his
tolerant attitude toward Jews, see, e.g., Szporluk 1981, pp. 119–121.
[5]In his will, Nobel had stated that the Peace Prize was to be awarded “to the person who shall
have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of
standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses” (see Crawford 1987, p. 217).
The prize for 1921 was eventually shared by Karl Hjalmar Branting, prime minister of Sweden and
Swedish delegate to the Council of the League of Nations, and Christian Lous Lange of Norway,
secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Brussels.
23. To Paul Zacharias
[Berlin,] 19. I. 21.
Sehr geehrter H. Doktor!
Ich bin Mitgld. d. pazifistischen Gesellschaft „B. N.
V.“,[1]
deren Sekretär der
Schriftsteller H.
L-R.[2]
davon.[3]
Was nun das
gez. AE.

Russbüldt had sent Einstein a circular letter asking whether Einstein’s name could be placed on the
BNV’s stationery among a list of prominent members (see 18 January 1921 in Calendar).
