anpackten.[9]

[3]A reference to Moszkowski 1921.
[4]Latin for “does not smell,” from the saying “pecunia non olet” (“money does not smell”). On the
controversy surrounding the publication of Moszkowski 1921, see Vol. 10, Introduction, p. xli.
[5]Hermann Einstein (1847–1902).
[6]The address of Paul M. Warburg, who had assumed the role of Einstein’s agent in the United
States (see Doc. 53).
[7]The previous day was the first anniversary of the Kapp Putsch. The military police was mobi-
lized in advance. However, far fewer demonstrators than expected took to the streets. A few hundred
“nationalist” students and former soldiers “with a banner inscribed ‘Germany for Germans,’ and all
wearing an anti-Semitic badge in the form of a swastika” protested against the Entente commissions
in Germany, and some “100 Communists with red flags followed the Nationalists.” That same day,
approximately 10,000 supporters of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany also
attended a mass rally “against the endeavors of the Entente” at the Lustgarten in Berlin (see Vossische
Zeitung and New York Times, 14 March 1921).
[8]Paul Epstein.
[9]A reference to the military suppression of the sailors’ rebellion against the Bolshevik govern-
ment in the Russian seaport town of Kronstadt (see Vossische Zeitung, 14 March 1921, Evening Edi-
tion) that had begun on 7 March.

Lieber Einstein!
Nicht Sie sondern ich bin der
Schuldige![1]
