SKETCHES AND CALCULATIONS ON THE MAGNET SYSTEM OF
THE GYROCOMPASS
The following sketches and calculations are preserved in the Schleswig-Holsteinische
Landesbibliothek, Kiel, Germany (GyKSHL). They consist of six sheets of paper of size ca.
17x13cm. The six sheets were folded in the middle, thus producing 24 pages that were later
paginated in pencil in the lower left and right corners.
The first page [1] is in Reta Anschütz-Kaempfe’s hand and indicates that the calculations
date from August 1921, when Einstein visited Kiel and worked with Hermann Anschütz-
Kaempfe on the cross section and wiring of the ring electromagnet, on eddy currents, and
on the follow-up system.
Pages [2], [4], [8], [11], [12], [17], [21]–[24] are blank and have not been reproduced. The
upper half of [p. 16] is in the hand of Hans Albert Einstein; [p. 18] is in Hermann Anschütz-
Kaempfe’s hand and has been reproduced here rotated 180 degrees.
Pages [3], [6/19], [7] [15], [20], and the lower half of [p. 16] are in an unknown hand.
All other pages are in Einstein’s hand. The sheet that contains [pp. 6/19] presents sketches
of physical processes and an experimental setup involving Bremsstrahlung that are appar-
ently unrelated to the gyrocompass.
