230. To Hermann Weyl
5 September [1921]
Dear Mr. Weyl,
There are no meetings at the Academy now. However, I will take the responsi-
bility to see that you receive the permission to print; it was granted me in the same
case as
well.[1]
So you do not have to wait. In relativity I abandoned the path again
that I had only hesitantly started down. Bach’s paper is nice but probably physically
meaningless, likewise Eddington’s attempt, which suffers from
indeterminacy.[2]
I
also still find inappropriate your interpretation of the electric
field.[3]
Without a
physical basis such a thing cannot be done. Eddington is an eminent person. It is a
joy to make his acquaintance. Go to England sometime. Eddington will surely
arrange for an invitation. I am not making any progress theoretically but have an
interesting experiment on the elementary process of light emission in the works, in
order to find out whether the field concept fails for
quanta.[4]
I am not going to
Jena.[5]
I hope we see each other another time.
Cordial greetings and good wishes for the holidays, also to your wife, yours,
A. Einstein.
