Lohmeier and Schell 2005, p. 161. [80 280]. [1]For Anschütz’s efforts to avoid damage by the acidic water to the electrodes feeding the gyro- scopes in the inner sphere, see Doc. 225. [2]Einstein possibly meant another metal, e.g., copper, coated with platinum (Lohmeier and Schell 2005, p. 162). [3]In addition to water, the inner sphere also “floated” on the magnetic field of a magnetic ring located underneath. On the problem of how to keep the sphere in an equilibrium position, see Doc. 225 and Vol. 12, Appendix B, p. 506. [4]On the negative result of this experiment, see Doc. 225. Apparently, Einstein considered a pos- itive result, namely, that rotating heated bodies induce a magnetic field, as an indication that terrestrial magnetism is caused by the rotating internal hot mass of the Earth and as an explanation for the prox- imity of the geographic and magnetic poles. For Einstein’s earlier considerations about a connection between the rotation of the Earth and the poles of its magnetic field, see his letter to Hendrik A. Lorentz of 23 January 1915 (Vol. 8, Doc. 47). 240. To Gustave Le Bon Berlin, den 18.
