ADS. [90 976]. Written on letterhead “The Miyako Hotel, Kyoto.” [1]Yamamoto, Se. 1931. [2]Dated on the assumption that Einstein wrote the preface when Senji Yamamoto visited him (see the following note). [3]Prior to Einstein’s visit, Senji Yamamoto, a Christian leader of the labor movement, had trans- lated Nicolai 1919 and published it as Nicolai 1922. He visited Einstein at the Miyako Hotel in Kyoto on 10 December 1922 and asked him to write a preface to the Japanese edition. During his discussion with Einstein, they had a disagreement over ideological issues such as militarism and nationalism and the role of intellectuals in the peace movement. For details of their discussion, see Yamamoto, Se. 1923, pp. 43–45.
