Following general conscription in Britain in 1917, Eddington held to his stance as a conscientious objector. His position led to the possibility that he would be interred for the remainder of the war in a detention camp. Through the intervention of Frank Dyson, the Astron- omer Royal, he received a deferral “with the express stipulation that if the war should end by May 1919, then Eddington should undertake to lead an expedition for the purpose of verifying Einstein’s prediction!” (see Chandrasekhar 1983, pp. 25–26). [7]Hermann Mark reported on his experiments in Doc. 125. 128. To Unknown [Berlin,] 11. X. 23. Hochachtung A. Einstein TTrK. The original is in Ilse Einstein’s hand. Partly published in Stargardt Auction Catalog 655, Auc- tion 3, 4 March 1994, Berlin, lot 454. [82 549]. The card is addressed “Herrn Berlin W. 8… .” The name and address of the addressee have been obliterated.
