2 6 6 D O C U M E N T 1 6 9 D E C E M B E R 1 9 2 3 169. From Albert A. Michelson [Chicago,] December fifth 1923 Dear Dr. Einstein: A rather vague rumor has reached me that you might possibly be willing to leave Europe to accept a professorship in an American University.[1] It would give me the greatest pleasure to have you accept a professorship in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. If there is any chance that you could be induced to do this, please let me know, and I shall undertake to make satisfactory financial ar- rangements if you will give me an idea of the approximate salary which you think you ought to receive. Very truly yours, A. A. Michelson TLS. [17 195]. Written on letterhead “The University of Chicago Ryerson Physical Laboratory,” and addressed “Dr. Albert Einstein University of Leiden Leiden, Holland.” A note in Ilse Einstein’s hand: “Beantw. am 26. XII. 23. I.” at the bottom of the page. [1]Einstein had received an offer from Columbia University a year earlier, which he declined (see Doc. 11). More recently, he had briefly considered moving to the United States (see Docs. 140 and 151).
