Michelson [Chicago,] December fifth 1923 Dear Dr. Einstein: A rather vague rumor has reached me that you might possibly be willing to leave Europe to accept a professorship in an American University.[1] It would give me the greatest pleasure to have you accept a professorship in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. If there is any chance that you could be induced to do this, please let me know, and I shall undertake to make satisfactory financial ar- rangements if you will give me an idea of the approximate salary which you think you ought to receive.
