D O C U M E N T 3 0 4 A U G U S T 1 9 2 4 4 7 3 [2]Philipp Lenard and Johannes Stark’s essay “Hitlergeist und Wissenschaft” (Lenard and Stark 1924) was published in Deutschland und Deutschheit. Ein Werbebuch für deutsches Leben und Schaf- fen, edited by Hermann Adolf Wiechmann, a book dealer and publisher of numerous German travel and poetry collections. The volume was dedicated to the memory of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the Ger- man “father of gymnastics,” teacher, folklorist, and founder of the Turnverein movement. By the 1920s, Jahn, who had coined the word “Volkstum,” had become a revered figure of the Nazi move- ment (see, e.g, Poliakov 2003, pp. 380–389). The volume, a paean to German culture, landscape, and history, contained, among others, works by Wiechmann, Ernst Moritz Arndt, Paul de Lagarde, and Julius Langbehn, alongside poems by Goethe and Schiller. Lenard and Stark’s article had first appeared on 8 May 1924 in the Großdeutsche Zeitung (see also Forman 1974, p. 58), a short-lived Munich newspaper designed to replace the Völkischer Beobachter, the banned organ of the NSDAP (see Hoser 1990). [3]Adolf Hitler (1889–1945), who had been arrested on 11 November 1923, after the Munich Beer Hall Putsch, and was incarcerated at the time General Erich Ludendorff (1865–1937), at the time rep- resentative of the Deutschvölkische Freiheitspartei in the Reichstag, who had also participated in the Putsch and Ernst Pöhner (1870–1925), former Munich chief of police and a friend of Hitler. [4]Lenard and Stark, in support of their völkisch attitude, expand the Aryan and anti-Semitic argu- ment: “One should not be under the illusion that the Aryan-Germanic blood is already significantly dwindling as a carrier of its proper spirit the spirit of the foreign race has been working at it for more than 2,000 years. It is no more than the same activity, always with the same Asiatic people in the back- ground, that brought Christ to the cross, Giordano Bruno to the stake, that shoots at Hitler and Luden- dorff with the machine gun and brings them behind fortified walls the struggle of the forces of darkness against the bringers of light, with the aim of excluding the latter from their actions on earth” (“Man täusche sich nicht darüber, dass arisch-germanisches Blut als Träger des ihm eigenen Geistes schon schwer im Schwinden begriffen ist fremdrassiger Geist arbeitet schon mehr als 2000 Jahre dahin.
