Mit bestem Gruss Ihr ganz ergebener A. Einstein. Facsimile of ALS (Karl und Faber dealer catalogue 89 (spring 1964), lot 2658). [22 358]. The lot description on p. 308 is the source of the editorial comments the facsimile on p. 307 is the source of the text. [1]Edgar Meyer (1879-1960), until recently Assistent and Privatdozent at the University of Zurich, accepted positions as Privatdozent in physics and Assistent in the physical institute of the Technical University of Aachen for winter semester 1909/1910 (see Meyer's curriculum vitae, Dozentenalbum III, SzZU, AA 65:1) the paper is Meyer, E. 1908. The review article that Einstein refused to write might be the one on the experimental foundations of the theory of relativity that LAUB published in 1910 in Stark's Jahrbuch der Radioaktivitat und Elektronik (Laub 1910). [2]At the 81st meeting of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte in September. [3]On 23 July 1909 Stark had submitted a paper to the Physikalische Zeitschrift, Stark 1909a, in which he argued that X-rays consist of spatially localized light quanta. See Wheaton 1983, pp. 120-125, for a historical discussion. [4]In a letter to Wilhelm Wien of seven months later Planck remarked that he was opposed to a corpuscular theory of electromagnetic waves and that he saw no need at all to adopt such a theory (see Max Planck to Wilhelm Wien, 21 February 1910, GyB, Nachlaß Wien, no. 43). 173. To the Department of Education, Canton of Bern Bern den 3. August 1909. Senatsakten, Vol. XXVII, 1909). [70 151]. A bureaucratic proce- dural note is omitted. [1]Emil Lohner (1865-1959), the Director of the Department. [2]Einstein's appointment began 15 October (see Doc. 154, note 2). [3]Einstein's withdrawal from the list of instructors was approved the next day (see Verfü- gung, 4 August 1909, SzBeSa, BB III b 10144, no. 1593).
