From Frau
Ruprecht
Rosshäusern
[Canton
of
Bern],

July
1908
To Dr. Einstein:
Unfortunately
I must tell
you
that
I
cannot
give
you lodgings
during
the vacation
because
unfortunately
I
have
no room.
I
have
inquired
at
a
farmer's house
in
the
vicinity
whether
they
have vacant
rooms
but
unfortunately
they
do not have
any
either.
We would
have
room
for
you
if
you
were
to
come
a
month later.
I
recommend
myself
for
the
next
year,
am
very sorry
that
we
are now
out
of
rooms.
Respectfully,
Mrs.
Ruprecht

To Jakob
Laub
Bern,
30
July
1908
Dear
Mr. Laub:
I
am very
pleased
that
you
have
read
my
papers;
this
happens
to be
the weakness
of
all
those
who write. How did
you
and
Wien[1]
finally
hatch the
plan
for
the
photoelectric
experiment?[2]
I know
that
not all
gases are
ionized,
but
this
does
not
entail
any difficulty
for
the
theory.
I'm
anxious
to
learn about
the
manner
in which
you
defended the
light
quanta
in
your
paper.[3]
I
am
delighted
that
you
will visit
me
in
September. I
am
going
on
vacation
on
10
August,
first
for
one
week
to Mürren,
and
then
probably
for
one
week
to
Isenfluh
(both
in the
Bern
Highlands).[4]
The
business with the
professorship
fell
through,
but that's
all
right
with
me.[5]
There
are
enough
teachers
even
without
me.
I
read
Seddig's
paper.[6]
He
managed
it
very
well. I do not
quite
know
what
to
make
of
the
account
of
the results.
Fichtbauer's
paper
interests
me
very much,
of
course.[7]
But
this time
I'll
keep
my
mouth
shut;
once
bitten, twice
shy.
Harms
did not
reply
to
me,
out
of
rage,
I
suspect.[8]
I lack all
psychological understanding
for this secretiveness.
I
well
understand
why you
want to
investigate
the
secondary Roentgen
effect with
thin
leaves;
after
all,
we
have
already
talked about
it.
In this
way we
stand
a
chance
to
really
obtain
all of
the
particles
accelerated
by
absorption;
that
says
it
all.
But I do not
understand
your
phrase
"where
I
adjust
the
layers
in such
a
way
that
they
absorb
now
the
X-rays,
now
the
ß-rays, equally strongly."
-
I
am
also
firmly
convinced
that
our
expressions
for
the
ponderomotive
forces
are
the
ones[9]
that
are
correct. I like
the idea of
an
experimental test
with
the
help
of
alternating
fields
that
you
have
thought
about
with Mr.
Kantor,[10] even
though
I
am
not
quite
convinced
that
it
can
be carried out
(because
of
