We
are
pleased
to
be
publishing
this translation of Volume 6 of
The
Collected
Papers
of
Albert Einstein. As with
previous
volumes,
while
every
effort has been made
to
ensure
the scientific
accuracy
of
these
translations, they
are
not
intended for
use
without
the
documentary
edition,
which
provides
the extensive editorial
commentary necessary
for
a
full historical
and
scientific
understanding
of the
source
documents.
As the reader will
note,
this is the first volume
to
be translated
on a more
selective
basis than the
previous
volumes. The editors of
The
Collected
Papers
have made
this
selection,
and
they
have also recommended
reprinting
earlier translations of Documents
24, 30, 42,
and
43
from other
sources.
We
are
doing so
with
the
permission
of the
earlier
publishers.
In
addition,
we
welcome
a new
translator of Einstein's scientific
writings:
Alfred
Engel,
a
mathematician;
and
a new
consultant: Professor
Engelbert
Schucking,
a
physicist
at
New York
University.
We
are
pleased
to
be
working
with both of
them and
thank them for their dedication
to
this
project.
