SELECTION
Of the numerous interviews conducted with Einstein, only those that take the form
of a declaration or statement by him and appear in an unbroken bloc without inter-
jections from the interviewer are presented as documents in the Writings series
(e.g., Doc. 62). Interviews that contain substantial blocs of quotations from Ein-
stein but have comments interspersed by the interviewer may be presented in an
appendix (e.g., Appendixes D and E in this volume) or significant fragments
thereof may be placed in the Calendar of the relevant Correspondence volume.
Where a letter was intended for public circulation but was never published (e.g.,
Doc. 61), or a letter was published whether or not Einstein so intended (e.g., Doc.
37), it is presented as a document in the Writings series.
If a text is not written by Einstein, but its appearance under his name was
approved by him soon after (e.g., Doc. 57), it is presented as a document.
PRESENTATION
Where Einstein has provided a title for a document, it appears in English translation
in quotation marks on the title page. In cases where no title has been assigned by
the author, the editors provide a title without quotation marks that describes the
substance of the document.
Published writings that are placed in an appendix appear in transcribed form.
TRANSCRIPTION
Where Einstein writes both k and κ in calculations of a given document, the roman
character k is used in transcription if the two characters cannot be distinguished in
the original.
