SEPTEMBER
1915
Here
people
are
much
more
confidently
and
aggressively
inclined vis-à-vis
politics
than in
Berlin,
no
doubt
because
the
food
situation
is
better.
I have
restrained
myself
much in
conversations
about
such
matters,
if
only
because it
is
boring
to
say
the
same
thing
over
and
over again.
Also,
observation has also
shown
me
that
it
is
not words and ideas
but
direct, tough experience
which
guides
the
world.
When
you
write
me, please
send
the
letters
& postcards
to
Maja.
I
don’t know
yet
where
I’ll
be
living
in
Zurich,
how
long
I’m
going
to
stay there,
or
whether
I’ll
go
to Arosa
first.[7]
But
I’ll
keep you nicely
up-to-date
about
everything so
that
you
don’t
get
the
feeling again
that
you’ve
been abandoned
by
thankless
me.
Kisses to
you
and
the little
minxes,
yours,
Albert.
Kind
regards
to Uncle
&
Aunt.

Einstein
[Lucerne,] Saturday.
[11
September
1915]
Dear
Elsa,
My letter-writing
sloth
is
indulging
itself in veritable
orgies.
But
I
hope
that
your indignation
will
have
dissipated by
the
time
we see
each
other
again.
Twice
I
was
together
with
the
children.[1]
After
that,
standstill. Cause: Mother’s fear of
the little
ones
becoming too dependent
on me.
Yesterday
I arrived
here, Monday
morning
I
am
returning to
Zurich.
Thursday
or so
I
am
going
to return home
to
Berlin.[2] I
am
looking
forward to
it
very
much and shall not concede
a
single
day.
The
outcome
of
the
trip
was
moderate.
Zangger
has
at
least
seen
beyond
doubt
which side
is
the
more
decent.
He will
kindly
ensure
that
I have the children for
a
while
every year.[3]
I
am
not
visiting
Romain
Rolland;[4]
there
is
no
point.
I
really
like
being here;
the
two
lead
a
very peaceful, pleasant life.[5] Today
Edith Einstein
will probably
also be
coming.[6]
She
wants
to
study
mathematics.
Yesterday
we
went
sailing
but
unfortunately
with
no
wind. In Zurich
I
was
together
with Besso
very
often;[7]
my
stay
in Zurich
was
very
much
improved by it,
but thus
I
neglected
my
duties to others.
Affectionate
greetings, yours,
Albert.
