MARCH
1916 199
199. To Hans Albert Einstein
[Berlin,]
Saturday.
[11
March
1916][1]
My
dear
son,
The
letter
I received
from
you a
moment
ago
pleased
me greatly.
If
you
wrote
it
by yourself, you
have
developed very
well indeed.[2]
Keep
it
up.
You don’t have
to
worry
about
secondary
school
[Gymnasium].
If
you
don’t
manage
to
get
in at
the
moment,[3]
you
can
always
catch
up
easily.
I
just
don’t
want
you
to
lose
a
year.
You have
to
be
at
school
far
too
long as
it
is.
When Tete
is
better
again,
take the
calcium
chloride with
him;
it
is
very
healthy.[4]
I
am
taking
it too.
I
am
very
glad
that
you enjoy
the
piano
so
much.[5] I
have
one
as
well
in
my
little
apartment[6]
and
play
it
daily.
I
also
play
the violin
a
lot.[7]
Perhaps
you
can
practice
something
to
accompany violin;
then
we can
play
it
at
Easter
when
we are together.
It
would have been
silly
for
me
to
try
to
come
for
New
Years.
I
would have
had to wait
almost
the
entire time at the border.[8]
But
at
Easter
(in
the first
days
of
April)
I will
definitely
try
it.
It
is
a
fine
achievement
that
Tete has learned to read
without
school.[9] He
must have
a good
memory
for him to have mastered it
so easily.
Earlier he
had
absolutely
no
aptitude
for
singing; my
father
was
also
completely
unmusical.
In
the last
few
months I
accomplished very
fine
things
again.[10]
How
much
I
am looking
forward
to
the
day
when
I
can
tell
you
about
such
things!
But
it
will
have to wait
a
couple
of
more
years.
Recently
I
had
an
odd
experience.
I
was
at
a
small social
gathering.
An
artist
was
also
there
who could read
a
person’s
character
off
the
pattern
of lines
on
the
palm
of
one’s
hand. She looked at
my
hand
as
well
and,
without
knowing
me
at
all,
said
some
very
applicable things.
That’s
very strange,
isn’t
it?
Tell
me
also
something
about
your
friends and what
you
do in
your
free time
for
entertainment.
Do
you play
a
lot with Tete?
Do
you
come
out
much into
the
fresh air? I would
like
to
know all
that.
When do
you
have
your
Easter
holidays?[11]
I
would
like to
know
this
so
that
I
can
plan
ahead
a
bit.
Kisses to
you
and Tete from
your
Albert.
Greetings
to Mama!
