APRIL

seeing

I
expect you
tomorrow
(Friday) morning
between
9
and
12 o’clock at
the
hotel.
Kisses from
your
Papa.

211. To
Mileva Einstein-Maric
[Zurich,]
8 April
[1916][1]
D[ear] M[ileva],
I just
received
your
letter. First
of
all,
my compliments
on
the
good
condition
of
our boys.
They
are
in
such excellent
physical
and mental
shape
that
I
could
not wish
for
more.
And
I know
that
this
is
for
the
most
part
thanks
to
the
proper
upbringing you provide
them.
I
am
likewise
thankful that
you
have not
alienated
me
from
the
children.
They
came
to meet
me spontaneously
and
sweetly.
I
am
very
much
looking
forward
to
being
able
to
spend
a
few
days
alone
with Albert.
There
would be
no
point
in
a
conversation between
us
and
it
could
only
serve
to
reopen
old
wounds.[2] I
am
sorry
that
I
misinterpreted
your
last
letter.
A
divorce between
us can-as
far
as
I
know-only take
place
on
the
basis of
a
complaint coming
from
you.[3]
For,
since I must
figure
as
the
guilty
party
and
I
cannot
sue myself,
this
seems
to be
the
only possibility.
The
first
question
is
now:
Are
you
inclined in
principle
to
filing
a
divorce claim
against
me? If
not,
then the
following questions
are
inapplicable.
It
seems
to
me
that
you
do
not
risk
anything
by doing
so, as
you
can
yourself
set
the conditions under
which
you
would
agree
to
a
divorce,
of
course.
If
you
are
in
principle
inclined
to submitting
a
divorce petition,
once we
have
agreed
on
the
terms,
the
question
arises whether
the
proceedings
are
to
take
place
here
or
in Berlin.
As
far
as
I
know,
it
is
unclear
whether
this
can
be done here.
In Berlin it
is
certainly possible
and
less protracted. Since
nothing
can
happen
except
under
conditions to which
you agree, you
are
not
sacrificing anything
by
having
the
petition filed
in Berlin.
Everything
will
be done
openly
and
honestly.
Therefore,
I
expect
an answer
to
the
following questions.
1)
Are
you
prepared, provided
that
we agree on
the
conditions,
to
submit the
claim?
2)
In
the
affirmative
case,
what
might your
conditions be?
3)
Are
you prepared,
in
the
case
of
agreement regarding
(1)
and
(2),
to
entrust
the
Berlin
lawyer[4]
already
advised with
performing
the formalities?-
