DOCS. 357-359 JUNE
1917
Do not be
annoyed
that
I
write
you
so
little;
there
is
no
other
way,
it
seems!
Good
intentions
don’t work in
the
long
run!
Best
regards
also to Anna and
Vero,
yours,
Albert.
I
am
leaving
on
Friday
&
and
am
at
my
mother’s until
my
departure
for Swit-
zerland.[6]
358. From Max
von
Laue
Würzburg, 25
June
1917
Dear
Einstein,
I
am
arriving
in
Frankfurt
on
the
30th, probably
not
before
the
afternoon;[1]
to be
more
precise,
the
train
is
arriving
at
3
o’clock
but
is
usually
between
a
to
1/2
an
hour behind schedule. From
the train
station, I
am
going directly
to
the1/4
Basler Hof Hotel. Then
we
still have
a
couple
of
hours ahead of
us,
of
course,
even
if I
leave
you
undisturbed
for
the last
hour before
your
lecture.[2]
I
have
some
questions,
namely,
I
have heard
of
a
generalization
of
Epstein’s
quantum
approach
for not
necessarily
periodic
systems,[3]
and
am
very
curious
about
it.
With
cordial
regards, yours,
M.
von
Laue.

To Willem de Sitter

June
[1917][1]
Dear de
Sitter,
I
agree
with
your
first
remark about the
orders
of
the
guv's.[2]
This
was
and
is
exactly my
opinion
as
well.
Experience
seems
to
indicate
only
the
approximate
constancy
of
g44,
where
the
argument
of
low
velocities and of
the
nonexistence of
systematic
line shifts
increasing
with
distance
are,
in
principle,
equivalent.
The second
question
is
whether to choose
elliptical
or
spherical
in
the
sense
proposed by me.
When
I
was
writing
the
paper,[3]
I
did not
yet
know
about the
elliptical possibility
and did not
think
of
it
myself
either.
It
is
obtained
from
what
I
am
advocating through
identifying
antipodal
points.
This
(elliptical) possibility
was
pointed
out to
me
very
soon
after
publication
of
my
article.[4]
This
possibility
seems more
likely
to
me
as well.[5]
