404. From Erwin Freundlich
Babelsberg, Berlin, 6
December
1917
Dear Mr.
Einstein,
With this letter
I
am
sending you
the draft
contract,
as
I
discussed it
yesterday
with Dr.
Oppenheim,
and
once again, very
briefly,
my
research
plans.[1]
1)
The
day
before
yesterday
I
immediately spoke
with
Struve.[2] He
fully approves
of
my leaving my
current
position on
1
Jan.
1918
and also
instantly
agreed
to
my
staying
nevertheless at
my
current residence until
April
1.
He intends to inform
the
Ministry
of
this
right
away.
We
also discussed all
that
is
necessary
for
the
smooth continuation
of
my
current researches.
2)
As
concerns
the draft
contract,
I
hope
that
we
have considered all
that
is
required.
As
far
as
the
second
paragraph
of
§1
is
concerned,
I
must still
inquire
at
the
Ministry
how
these
generally applicable provisions read, especially concerning
my pension
entitlement.
I
have directed
a
petition to
Undersecretary
Naumann
asking
that
I
be
placed
on
leave of
absence for
the duration
of
the
coming 5 years
and
that
these
years
be credited
to
me
later.
Would
it not
be
advisable that the
Board
of
Directors
of
the
K.
W.
I. endorsed this
petition?
(I am
enclosing
a
transcription
of
this
petition.)[3]
Regarding
§2,
7, 8, you might
have
to
discuss this with Planck sometime.
For each small
purchase,
for
phot[ographic]
plates,
for
ex., or
for
a
new
cell
for
a
measuring
instrument,
I
cannot first submit
a
long-winded
written
petition.
What
leeway per
month
(see §7)
am
I
going
to
be
granted?
Based
on
what
I
have been
told in
Potsdam, for
ex.,
I
count
on
being
granted
smaller
purchases
without
complications, e.g.,
for
plates,
out of
the
budget
of
that
institute.[4] But
I certainly
would have to have
some
kind
of
recourse.[5]
I have added
§6
just
for
the
sake
of
completeness,
because
the
Jagor
Foun-
dation,[6] for
ex., always emphasizes explicitly
that
it be mentioned in
the
publi-
cations,
in
a
clearly
visible
spot,
that
it
was
the
donor of funds for the relevant
research.
§8.
For
§8
it must be considered
if I
can
ask to have
the
right
to
keep
things
that
I
had
procured
out of
K.
W.
I.
funds until
the
conclusion
of
the
researches
or
only
until the termination
of
the
contract. The former
seems more
appropriate
