DOCS.

423. From Max
Planck
Grunewald, 29
December 1917
Dear
Colleague,
Of
course
I
agree entirely
with
your
intention
of omitting
§2
of Freundlich’s
contract.
I
had
to
laugh
heartily
about
your
sensitive
perception
of Nernst’s
reasoning;
it
thoroughly
suits
your good
nose
for
science.[1]
However,
I would
like
to
emphasize,
as a
matter
of
principle,
that
in
general
I
do set
some
store
in
a
provision corresponding
to
§2
in
other
contracts of this sort. For
I
could
very
well
imagine
the
case
where
someone
who
has
been
supported
by
the
Kaiser Wilhelm
Institute
does not
come
up
with
anything
worthwhile in
the
end and
then,
on
his
own
initiative,
publishes
his worthless results
on
the
authority
of his relation
to
the
K. W.
Institute
in
the
hope
of
promoting
himself this
way.
This could
cause
us some
embarrassment,
and
that
is
why,
in
general,
we
ought
to
try to protect
ourselves from such incidents.
But
in Freundlich’s
case,
there
is
no danger,
of
course,
to
the
extent
that
you
have him in
hand,
so
to
speak.
I
generously forgive
your
omission
of
my
name
in
the
“announcement.”
It
is fortunate, though,
that
it wasn’t
some
other
name, by
chance.[2]
May
the
New Year
bring you
full
recovery
from
your
health
complaints![3]
I
hope
that
during
the
same
year your sympathies
for
the German
Party
grow
as
well;
it
is
ever
ready
for
peace, despite
our
being
in
such
a
favorable
position
militarily
now as never
before.[4]
I
am
also
pleased
with
the
rapid
rise in
our
exchange
rate.[5]
So,
on
the 2nd
we
have
colloquium.
Will
the
room
be heated
then, I wonder?[6]
With
cordial
greetings,
yours,
Planck.
