764 DOCUMENT 542
MAY
1918
[1]Cited
from Doc. 537 where the
text
cited ends with
"genannt
zu
werden." The allusion
is to
the
publication
of
a
booklet
of
essays (see
Doc.
522).
[2]See
Vol.
6,
Doc.
8,
for
the
text
of
the Manifesto
to
the
Europeans
drawn
up
in
autumn 1914 and
published in
Nicolai
1917.
[3]During
the
siege
of
Syracuse by
the Romans in 212
B.C.,
Archimedes is
reported
to
have uttered
these words
or a
variant
thereof
to
a
Roman
soldier,
who threatened
to
disturb the circles that he had
drawn in the sand for his mathematical work. In
spite
of
the Roman commander’s order to
spare
the
scientist,
the soldier killed him.
[4]Nicolai
sought
to
salvage
the
publication proposal,
from which Einstein
was distancing
himself
a
week
earlier
(see
Doc.
537).
For evidence that the
proposal was originally
Nicolai’s
idea,
see
Doc.
522,
note 5.
[5]This
phrase
is added
by
hand.
Nicolai's
optimism was
in
part a
reflection
of
his
high hopes
for
a
second,
revised edition
of
Nicolai 1917. Five months
earlier,
he had written his Swiss
publisher
that
impoundment
of
the book
by
the German authorities would
probably
soon
be lifted
(see Georg
Nico-
lai
to
Orell Füssli
Verlag,
10
December
1917,
GyMIZ,
ED
184,
vol.
40).
He also lobbied Einstein in-
directly
for
a
recommendation
of
the book
to
the Nobel
Society
(see
Georg
Nicolai
to
Ilse
Einstein,
ca.
January
1918
[84 288],
Eva
Kayser,
New
York), presumably
in
hopes
of
receiving
a
Peace Prize.

Sehr verehrter
Herr
Kollege!
Vielen Dank für Ihre beiden
Briefe,
die mich hier erreichten. Es tut mir sehr
leid,
Ihnen
mitteilen
zu
müssen,
dass ich bei meiner
Ablehnung
bleibe:[1]
es
geht
wirk-
lich
nicht,
ich kann nicht noch mehr übernehmen. Jetzt
muss
ich die
11/2
Urlaubs
Tage zu Pfingsten
beinahe ausschliesslich
am
Schreibtisch
verbringen,
weil meine
ganze Privatcorrespondenz liegen geblieben
ist.
Ich bin
gerne
bereit
später
einmal den Vorsitz
zu
übernehmen,
wenn
wieder
ru-
higere
Zeiten
eingetreten
sind. Jetzt wird sich viel
besser
irgend
ein freier
Kollege
dazu
eignen.
Dass
ich
zufallig
in
Berlin
tätig bin,[2]
hat damit
eigentlich
nichts
zu
tun,
da ich mir
eigentlich
die
Tätigkeit
eines
Vorsitzenden der Deutschen
Physika-
lischen
Gesellschaft viel umfassend
denke;
die
Leitung
der
Geschäfte
der
"Orts-
gruppe"
Berlin müsste nach wie
vor
in den Händen eines Berliner
Mitglieds
blei-
ben.[3]
Darüber
können wir
ja
vielleicht einmal mündlich
uns
aussprechen.
Mit den besten Grüssen Ihr
stets
ergebener
M. Wien.

[1]Six days earlier,
Wien had declined the
chairmanship
of
the Deutsche
Physikalische
Gesell-
schaft
(DPG) (see
Doc.
538).
[2]While
fulfilling
his
military
commitment
(see
Doc.
538).
[3]The
statutes
of
the DPG divided its
membership
into Berliners and non-Berliners
(see
Doc.
14).
