Prof. Dr. L. Grebe.
ALS (GyBP, I. Abt., Rep. 34, Nr. 3, Mappe Grebe). [78 052]. Written on letterhead “Physikalisches
Institut der Universität Bonn.” There are perforations for a loose-leaf binder at the left margin of the
letter.
[1]As intended in early May (see entry of 5 May 1919 in Calendar). At midday on 6 June, the Berlin
workers’ councils (Arbeiterräte) called a one-day strike in protest of the Bavarian government’s exe-
cution of Eugen Leviné (1883–1919) for his participation in the Bavarian Soviet Republic (see “24-
stündiger Generalstreik in Berlin geplant,” Berliner Tageblatt, 6 June 1919, Evening Edition; “Der
24-Stunden-Streik: Berlin wieder ohne Verkehr,” Vossische Zeitung, 7 June 1919, Evening Edition;
and Bernhard 1919a). See also Doc. 44 for Einstein’s intervention on behalf of Leviné.
Another factor in Grebe’s decision may have been the unrest in Bonn and other parts of the Rhine-
land, where separatists calling for independent, neutral Rhenish states clashed with German nation-
alists in the first week of June (see, e.g., “Die Rheinlande im Kampf mit den Hochverrätern,” Berliner
Tageblatt, 3 June 1919, Morning Edition).
The collaborator is Albert Bachem.
[2]In late April, Einstein offered Grebe Erwin Freundlich’s Koch microphotometer, and informed
him that the board of directors of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Physics had proposed financial sup-
port for his work to the board of trustees (see entry of 26 April 1919 in Calendar). In his letter of
thanks, Grebe envisaged using Freundlich’s instrument as a model for constructing his own spectro-
photometer (see entry of 5 May 1919 in Calendar).
[3]Schwarzschild 1914 and St. John 1917. Any asymmetrical broadening of the line can be misin-
terpreted as a shift in the position of the line. Because the redshift predicted by relativity is small, any
shift toward the violet would mask it. For Einstein’s appreciation of this fact, see Doc. 192.
[4]After the financial support was granted (see Wilhelm von Siemens to Einstein, entry of 16 June
1919 in Calendar), Grebe submitted their paper, at Einstein’s suggestion, to the Verhandlungen der
Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft on 21 June and sent a copy to Einstein as well (see entry of
29 June 1919 in Calendar). It was published as Grebe and Bachem 1919.

Lieber Herr Kollege,
In I[hr]er letzten mich natürlich sehr interessierenden Note (10. April d.
J.)[2]
