[1]Grommer (1879–1933), a mathematician, was Einstein’s occasional collaborator, even offering
Einstein’s course on the theory of relativity at the University of Berlin in the summer semester 1917
during Einstein’s absence (see Einstein to Paul Ehrenfest, 22 July 1917 [Vol. 8, Doc. 362]). His col-
laboration with Einstein in investigating spherically symmetric, static gravitational fields is acknowl-
edged in Einstein 1917b (Vol. 6, Doc. 43), p. 146.
[2]In sec. 3 of Einstein 1918f (Vol. 7, Doc. 9), Einstein addressed the question whether the differ-
ential law for the tensor density of matter and gravitation also entails the
integral law in the case of a spatially closed universe. In his proof that this
is the case for an exactly spherical world, given in polar coordinates by a line element
he made use of boundary conditions that
are verified only for this specific case. Whether the result would still hold for a “quasi-spherical”
world, i.e., a world of spherical spatial topology but with an inhomogeneous, nonstatic matter distri-
bution, was only conjectured and left as an open problem. In Einstein to Felix Klein, 22 October 1918,
