[2]Two months later, Bergmann would again use the term “Levantine university” in an article on
the planned conference on the Hebrew University. As “there was still an abyss” between those with a
knowledge of Hebrew and those with a knowledge of the relevant fields, the Zionist movement “must
be wary of erecting a university with a low niveau, a Levantine university, which will not add anything
to our cultural richness and which no Jew in the world will acknowledge as his national university”
(Bergman 1919, pp. 4–5).
At the time, the major institutions of higher learning in the Levant (the countries and islands in the
eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea) were Al-Azhar University, Cairo University, and the American
University in Cairo; Istanbul University and Robert College in Istanbul; and the Syrian Protestant Col-
lege and the Jesuit College in Beirut (see Reid 1990). Opinions about the quality of the universities in
the region apparently varied among the Zionist intelligentsia and these differing attitudes were aired
at the discussions on the planned Hebrew University at the 11th Zionist Congress held in Vienna in
September 1913 (see Kolatt 2000, p. 57, and Bartal 2000, p. 88).
[3]One week earlier, Julius Berger had informed Bergmann of Einstein’s general enthusiasm for
the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, and particularly for the Hebrew University. He had
recommended that the Zionist bureau in London contact Einstein directly (see Julius Berger to Hugo
Bergmann, 15 October 1919, IsJCZA, Z3/690).

years in Prague, see Frank 1949, pp. 150–151.
[6]“S”stands for “Shmuel” in Bergmann’s signature. Bergmann’s full name in Hebrew was Shmuel
Hugo Bergmann. In later years he also used the name Hugo Bergman.

Lieber Freund Einstein
Wo ist Ihre Mutter? In Berlin vermutete ich Sie.
Sie sagte mir, sie gehe anderswohin. Ich möchte sie besuchen (Brambergs
A.)[2]
