181. To Wilhelm Hort
Berlin, den 29. Nov. 19.
Sehr geehrter Herr Kollege!
Wahrnehmbarkeit.[4]
Mit vorzüglicher Hochachtung

tenburg.”
[1]Hort proposed a terrestrial experiment to measure the Lense-Thirring precession in Doc. 176.
[2]Here k is the coupling constant that is usually denoted by κ (see, e.g., Einstein 1916e [Vol. 6,
Doc. 30], p. 818).
[3]Presumably Einstein 1916g (Vol. 6, Doc. 32), in which Einstein introduces the linearized
approximation of the gravitational field, which allows the calculation of the field quantities in a way
that is analogous to the calculation of retarded potentials in electrodynamics. In this paper, the order
of magnitude of the constant κ is given as one of the reasons why gravitational radiation is unobserv-
able “in all imaginable cases” (“in allen nur denkbaren Fällen,” p. 695).
[4]Einstein was familiar with Jan Schouten’s prediction of geodetic precession (see Doc. 10), an
effect generally larger than the gyroscopic precession caused by frame dragging. The astronomer
Willem de Sitter, in his addendum to Schouten 1918, had declared it unlikely that this effect could be
detected in the annual motion of Earth. De Sitter himself had considered a number of relativistic cor-
rections to the motion of the Earth–Moon system without finding one that was detectable (see De Sit-
ter 1916a, 1916b, and 1917).
