[3]Already in the fall of 1917 Einstein had criticized Guillaume’s work on relativity, which
attempted to reconcile the use of Lorentz transformations with the existence of a universal time and
in which the speed of light was no longer a constant (see Einstein to Edouard Guillaume, 24 October
1917 [Vol. 8, Doc. 394], and earlier letters).
[4]At this point in the original text, Guillaume indicates a note that he has appended at the foot of
the page: “Eine ausführliche Abhandlung wird bald in den Archives erscheinen.” The publication is
Guillaume 1920.

[7]See Einstein 1916f, p. 62, or Einstein 1916e (Vol. 6, Doc. 30), p. 820. The direct quote from Ein-
stein goes only as far as the first line of equations and refers to the case of a clock at rest in a static
gravitational field. The emphasis on the word “Uhrperiode” is Guillaume’s. Note that α in the second
line now stands for , with M a gravitating mass and κ the coupling constant occurring in the
gravitational field equations.

redshift of light, see, e.g., Evershed 1918 and St. John 1917.
[9]Einstein promised Guillaume to visit with him in his letter of 9 October 1917 (Vol. 8, Doc 387).

Zürich 1, Rämistr. 69, den 25. Januar 1920
Lieber Herr Einstein!
on vorschlagen.
