Lebhafteste.[7]
Paul Epstein.

Einstein’s refusal, see Docs. 286 and 289, respectively.
[2]In his 1918 Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, Thomas Mann wrote: “I want the monarchy, I
want a tolerably independent government, because it alone guarantees political freedom, both in the
intellectual and in the economic spheres. […] I do not want the parliamentary and party economic
system that causes the pollution of all national life with politics. […] It is thus and not otherwise, that
in Germany national affirmation encompasses the negation of politics and democracy—and vice
versa.”
Mann 1960, pp. 261–264,
emphasis in original). For Mann’s conservatism, see Stern, F. 1974, Reed 1996.

[4]Hans Dominik (1872–1945) was a German engineer and writer of technical-utopian novels;
Charles Nordmann (1881–1940) was an astronomer at the Paris Observatory; Prometheus was a Ger-
man popular science magazine.
[5]Émile Borel (1871–1956) was Professor of Theory of Functions at the Sorbonne and deputy
director of the École normale supérieure.
[6]For Einstein’s proposal to Edgar Meyer, see Doc. 247.
[7]Einstein had informed Heinrich Mousson, director of the Department of Education, Canton of
Zurich, of his intention to cancel the planned cycle of relativity lectures in the summer of 1920 due
to lack of time and because he had exhausted the subject (see entry of 20 December 1919 in Calendar).
[8]Earlier that month, Einstein had asked Edgar Meyer whether two positions for Simon Rat-
nowsky and Epstein as extraordinary professors at the University of Zurich, each with a salary equiv-
alent to that of a cantonal teacher, could be created (see Doc. 247).
