Doc. 78, note 10), Hermann Weyl had identified its curl with the electromagnetic
field tensor, thus unifying the gravitational and electromagnetic fields by way of a generalization of
Riemannian geometry (Weyl 1918a, 1919b). The theory was incorporated in §34 of Weyl 1919a. For
Einstein’s June 1918 review of the 1918 edition of Weyl’s book (Weyl 1918b), see Einstein 1918h
(Vol. 7, Doc. 10); for Einstein’s objections against Weyl’s generalization, see Doc. 78 and Einstein
1918g (Vol. 7, Doc. 8), appended to Weyl 1918a; for a detailed historical discussion, see Scholz 2001,
especially pp. 70–79, 208–215.
[12]See Doc. 284, in which Einstein also confides to Max Born his interest in an overdetermined
field theory. Here he implicitly draws a connection between such a strategy and a unified field-
theoretical approach that encompasses both the electromagnetic and gravitational fields.
[13]Rocco Serini (1886–1964) was assistente at the University of Pavia. More precisely, Serini’s
proof concerned only static vacuum solutions. Einstein had read an abstract of Serini 1918 in the
Physikalische Berichte (see Doc. 288).
[14]In Einstein 1918e (Vol. 7, Doc. 4) Einstein made the same statement.

295. To Ludwig Hopf
[Berlin,] 2. II. 20.
Lieber Herr
Hopf![1]
Hause,[3]
Also
Besänftigen Sie also bitte
Sommerfeld,[5]
indem Sie ihm meine wahrhaft bemit-
leidenswerte Lage (glänzendes Elend) wahrheitsgetreu vorstellen und seien Sie
herzlich gegrüsst von Ihrem
Einstein.
