A. Lampa
ALS. [15 052].
[1]Unknown letter.
[2]Einstein was appointed full professor of physics in 1910 at the German University of Prague,
then in the Austrian crown land of Bohemia; Lampa was a colleague (see Doc. 291).
[3]Presumably a reference to the suffering during the war, as well as the poverty and starvation due
to the wartime blockade and its extension for several months past the armistice (see Doc. 177, note 7).
[4]One of the new editions of Einstein 1917a (Vol. 6, Doc. 42).
[5]Einstein and Grossmann 1913 (Vol. 4, Doc. 13).
[6]With the defeat of Germany and Austria-Hungary at the end of 1918, the German University in
Prague attempted to declare itself an Austrian property and even contemplated a move to Reichenberg
(Liberec). On 29 April 1919, however, the representatives of the university took an oath of allegiance
to the new Czechoslovak Republic and thus preserved its academic equality to other Czech institu-
tions of higher learning. Nevertheless, on 19 February 1920, the Czech University in Prague was
declared as the legal successor to the pre-1882 Karl-Ferdinand University, and the German University
had to relinquish many of its possessions and insignia (see Svatoš 2003, pp. 136–137, and Pešek 2003,
pp. 150–152).
[7]Johann Lampa.
[8]One member of the selection committee, Rudolf Wegscheider, asked for Lampa’s assistance in
contacting Einstein (see Doc. 267). Einstein recommended Ehrenhaft both to him (see Docs. 269 and
302) and to another member, Richard Wettstein (see Doc. 323).
[9]Lampa 1918, a copy of which is in Einstein’s library, and Lampa 1919.

Sehr geehrter Herr Professor.
Reichsgericht gelangt.
