Zurich, Tuesday [8 January

Dearest Helene!
[...]
But I
hope
that
we
will
see
each
other
in Zurich this
summer as
you
wrote, i.e.,
provided
that
we
will
still
be in Zurich. The truth
is,
we
haven't yet the
slightest
idea what fate has in
store
for
us.
Albert
applied
for
a
practical
job in Vienna. Since, after all, he
should
earn some
money,
he wants to
improve
himself in theoretical
physics while
holding
a
job
so
that
he
can
become
a
university
professor
later
on.
We
don't
know, however,
what will
come
of that.
Likewise, only the gods know what will become of
me,
whether I'll
really
get
a
job at
a
girls' Gymnasium.
We
still live and work
as
before.
During
these
last few days
we
have been
sledding
a
lot
on
the
Zurichberg,
as
you see,
we
still have
our
innocent
passions.
Albert felt in seventh heaven whenever
we
went
downhill "like the devil."

Dear Frau Leni
[diminutive
of
Helene]!
Since nothing else
comes
to
my
mind and I wish to write to
you
something all the
same,
I
am
sending
my
regards
to
you
and
your
old
man.

We
have instituted
inquiries
about Albert Einstein both here and
in Milan.
Subject designates
himself
as a
student of mathematics from
Ulm,
he
lives at the above-mentioned address
as a
lodger,
and he did
not offer
any
evidence
as
to his economic circumstances
to
the
extent
that
we
here tried to learn about
them,
except that it could be
established that he does
not
yet have
any
income from his
own
work.
Regarding the report that arrived from Milan
today,
it follows
from it that he does not have
resources
from the
parental
side either.
They write:
"The Einstein
family
lives in Milan;
father Einstein of the firm
Einstein
&
Co. has his office in the Via
Bigli
No. 21 and the
shop
(for
the manufacture of electric
motors)
in the Via Lecchi No. 106 and
he has resided in Milan for the last
5
years;
before that he
was
associated with
a
certain Garoni in Pavia, but the firm has been
liquidated because of insufficient business.
In
Milan Einstein senior
seems
to do somewhat better, but he does not
own
any
real estate and
Einstein
junior
certainly
cannot count
on
financial help
from his
father. While
one
can
say
about Einstein senior that he provides for
