384 BIOGRAPHIES Koch, Caesar b. 3 April 1854 in Cannstatt, Württemberg d. ? 1941 in Brussels Einstein's maternal uncle. Son of grain merchant and court provisioner Julius Koch. Ca. 1867-1869, lived in Zurich as apprentice, then as merchant in grain-trading house. 1869, became citizen of Hofen, canton of Schaffhausen, though still resident of Zurich. 1879-1887, grain merchant in Russia, Romania, and Western Europe gave Einstein toy steam engine during a visit to Munich. 1887-1888, grain merchant in Argentina. 1888, returned to Europe and married Mathilde Levy, with whom he had three children. Ca. 1890-1927, involved in grain trade in London and Antwerp until wife's death. 1927-1941, lived in Brussels with daughter Suzanne after retiring. Maier, Gustav b. 6 September 1844 in Ulm d. 11 March 1923 in Zurich Family friend, advisor during Einstein's early years. Son of a merchant in Ulm. 1870, took over father's business. 1872, married Regina Friedländer, with whom he had three children. 1876-1881, manager of Ulm branch of Deutsche Reichsbank made the acquaintance of Einstein family. 1881-1891, director of Reichsbank in Frankfurt/Main. 1886, helped found Frankfurt Peace Union served as director and treasurer until 1892. 1891-1895, lived in Ermatingen, canton of Thurgau withdrew from active business role to dedi- cate himself to writing and educating public on social and economic issues. 1895-1923, lived in Zurich director of a bank and Brann department store. 1895, assisted Einstein in attempt to enter ETH arranged Einstein's stay with Winteler family in Aarau. 1896-1900, visited at home by Einstein while a student at the ETH. 1896, helped found Swiss Ethical Culture Society editor of its periodical until 1919. 1898, published his most influential work, Soziale Bewegungen und Theorien bis zur modernen Arbeiterbewegung (nine editions). 1900-1914, was active in Zurich Peace Union gave numerous lectures on economic benefits of peace.
