tionsspektrum
anzuschliessen,[3]
dessen Erzeugungsart was Druck, Temperatur,
worden.[7]
Hoffentlich geht es Ihnen gut. Wann machen Sie Ferien? Meine Addres-
se lautet bis Ende August: Dettendorf (Post Aibling) Oberbayern. Mit den Grüssen
auch an die Ihren Ihr
Erwin Freundlich
ALS. [11 158].
[1]An electrical resistance oven had been placed at Freundlich’s disposal for spectroscopic work at
the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Most laboratory spectra
were derived from arc lamps, which had a number of unsatisfactory features associated with the elec-
tric discharge that heated the gas, such as the “pole effect.” The oven method, which heated the gas
thermally, did not suffer from these problems and could produce conditions of very high temperature
and low pressure similar to that obtaining in the atmosphere of the Sun. See Hentschel 1997, pp. 88–
89, for a discussion of Freundlich’s work with the oven.
[2]Grebe and Bachem’s work, which Freundlich was hoping to replicate, like that of many others
interested in solar redshift measurements, focused on the cyanogen band, which was relatively insen-
sitive to pressure and other environmental effects (see Grebe and Bachem 1920a and 1920b).
[3]The solar spectrum (except in the so-called reversing layer, seen during total solar eclipses) is of
the absorption type, whereas typical arc spectra are of the emission type.
[4]Carl Bosch (1874–1940) was Managing Director of the BASF. Freundlich had designed and
monitored the construction of a private observatory for Bosch (see Hentschel 1997, p. 170).
[5]Felix Stumpf (1885–?) was Privatdozent at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg;
Woldemar Voigt (1850–1919) was Professor of Physics at the University of Göttingen.
[6]Ernst Hochheim (1876–?).
[7]The contract on the construction of a tower telescope for astrophysical testing of the theory of
general relativity was signed in July 1920 (Calendar). An Einstein Donation Fund had been estab-
lished at the end of 1919 (see Einstein to Konrad Haenisch, 6 December 1919 [Vol. 9, Doc. 194]), and
contributions from the German industry to its costs were solicited. See Hentschel 1997 for a detailed
history of the tower’s construction.
