408 DOCUMENTS 356, 357 FEBRUARY 1912 356. To Conrad and Paul Habicht Prague, 9 February 1912.[1] After informing the brothers that he is presently grappling with the problem of gravitation and squabbling with a number of colleagues, he expresses his pleasure at returning to Zurich. . .[2] PTr (Seelig 1960, p. 221). [1]Dated in Seelig 1960, p. 221. [2]Einstein was returning to Switzerland to take up an appointment at the ETH (see the pre- ceding document). 357. To Paul Ehrenfest Prag. 12. II. [19]12. Lieber Herr Ehrenfest! 475). [9 320]. There are perforations for a loose-leaf binder at the left mar- gin of the document. [1]Ehrenfest had mailed a letter to Einstein from Zurich on 10 February after holding dis- cussions about a Habilitation the day before with Peter Debye of the University of Zurich and Pierre Weiss of the ETH. In his diary Ehrenfest noted that "Debye gives me little hope" ("Debye macht mir wenig Hoffnung") (see entry of 9 February, Diary "D," NeLR, Ehrenfest Archive, Notebooks, ENB:4-10), but after talking to Weiss he felt that his prospects for an ap- pointment at the ETH were excellent (see Paul Ehrenfest to Tatiana Ehrenfest, 14 February 1912, Ehrenfest Archive, Personal Correspondence, EPC:3, section 6). [2]Einstein was alluding to a position as Extraordinary Professor that might become avail- able at the University of Zurich should Peter Debye depart (see Doc. 366). [3]Ehrenfest arrived in Prague eleven days later at 2:50 in the afternoon (see Paul Ehrenfest
