[Berlin, 12 November 1923]
I think that this calculation by Mr.
Orthmann[2]
correctly reflects quantitatively
what I tried to express qualitatively in words; tonight I prepared another consider-
ation that seems to me to prove my conception as absolutely right, but which I am
too lazy to write down now—we are going to be discussing this case again, aren’t
we.
Best regards,
Peter Pringsheim.
148. Wilhelm Orthmann to Peter Pringsheim
[Berlin,] 12 November 1923
Highly Esteemed Professor,
Permit me to attempt to recapture, by letter, the position almost already lost last
night.
Let us just consider the linear problem. One considers radiation of normal Dop-
pler width moving in the x direction that is absorbed by the atoms and either just
transmitted further in the x direction or emitted in the opposite direction. In the first
case, we have no change in frequency; this case is uninteresting.
