SUPPLEMENT TO
THE
EDITORIAL
METHOD
IN
VOLUME ONE
PRESENTATION OF TEXTS
Published
papers
are
dated
by
the date
of
completion,
if
known;
otherwise,
by
the
earliest
known
of
the dates
of
submission,
reception, or publication.
Previously
published
texts
are presented
in
facsimile,
preserving
all
relevant
features
of
the
original publication, including
pagination
and
running
heads.
Parts
of
texts not relevant to this edition but
appearing
on
the
same page as
text
by
Einstein
are,
where
possible,
"screened"
to
reproduce
them in
lighter
type.
On
the
page preceding
the text the reader will find the document
number,
English
title,
the
document's
short title from the list
of
Literature
Cited,
dates
of
completion,
submission,
reception
and
publication,
if
known,
as
well
as
the
place
of
comple-
tion and the
source
for each text.
Republished
versions
of
an
Einstein text with
revisions
or
annotations that
may
be ascribed to Einstein
are
also noted
on
that
page.
Some
of
the information
on
the title
page
is
repeated
in the
unnumbered
descriptive
note at the end
of
the document.
An
English
running
head and
a running
page
number
appear
above
the rule
on
every page
of
text. Numbers
indicating
editorial footnotes
are presented
in
square
brackets
in
the
margins
of
texts
reproduced
in
facsimile,
directly
adjacent to
the
line
containing
the
passage
or
equation upon
which the
note comments.
Annota-
tion
begins
after
the last
page
of
facsimile
text,
or on
the
bottom of
the
page
of
very
short
texts,
if
space
allows.
If
a
text
of
a
later
supplement
to
a paper is,
in the
original, printed immediately
following
the
paper,
then this
presentation
is
retained. Both dates
are
noted in the
Table
of
Contents,
on
the relevant title
page,
and
in
a
textual
note.
In
the
case
of
Einstein's
reviews, the
original
title
of
the
article
or
book
under
review is
given.
Translations
are provided
in
the editorial
apparatus
for
all
non-English
citations.
In this volume and in future
volumes,
subjects
of
biographies
in
an
earlier Cor-
respondence
volume
are
identified in the Index
by printing
the
subject's
last
name
in small
capitals,
and
following
the
name by
the volume
number
in
parentheses
(e.g.,
"BESSO,
Michele
Angelo
[Vol.
1]").
