SUPPLEMENT TO THE
EDITORIAL METHOD IN
PREVIOUS VOLUMES
ESTABLISHMENT OF TEXTS
Where
a
set
of discussion
fragments
in Einstein's hand
exists-for
example,
his
discussion remarks
at
the
first
Solvay Congress
(Doc.
25)-it
will
serve as
the
source
of
a
text
rather than
the
published
version of
those
remarks.
Signi-
ficant variations
in
all
available texts will be
noted.
PRESENTATION
The location of
the
original or
of
the
photocopy
in the Einstein Archive of
an
unpublished manuscript
will be
noted
by
reel
and document
number in the
descriptive
note to
the relevant document. Editorial
comments
on a
set
of
discussion
fragments,
which
together
comprise a
document,
will be set
in
a
smaller font
size to
distinguish
them from the
text.
The editorial
comments
will
precede
the Einstein
text
and
will
also
serve
to
summarize the
content
of
a
paper,
lecture,
address,
or
statement to
which the Einstein
text is
a
response.
TRANSCRIPTION
If
a
significant
portion
of
a
text
or a
calculation has been crossed
out
as a
whole,
it
will
be crossed
out
by a diagonal
line
in
the
transcription
rather than
enclosed in
angle
brackets
as
is
done for minor cancelations.
ANNOTATION
If discussion remarks
by
Einstein
are reproduced as
part
of
a
published
dis-
cussion,
the remarks
by participants
other
than
Einstein
are
annotated
only
to
supply biographical
and
bibliographical
information.
The fact
that
some
notes correct
calculational
errors
is not
meant to
imply
that
all
such
errors
have been detected
or
found
worth
annotating.
