Friendliest
greetings
to all
of
you
from
our
somewhat
chilly
vacation.

Einstein declines
writing a
review because of overwork. In his
stead,
among
others,
he
recommends
Jacob
Laub, "who
is
presently [Assistent]
with Lenard in
Heidelberg."
He
also recommends
an
individual
who
is
now
in
your
institute
and who
had
already produced
a
superbly
written
paper
in the Jahrbuch.[1]
I
look
forward
to
making your
acquaintance
in
Salzburg.[2]
I
am
curious
to
learn the
reasons
that
moved
you
to ascribe to the
quanta
a
spatial
existence in
the
ether.[3] I
am
carrying on a lively
correspondence
about
this
subject
with
Planck;
he
still
stubbornly
opposes
material
(localized)
quanta.[4]
You
cannot
imagine
how
hard
I have
tried
to
contrive
a
satisfactory
mathematical formulation of
the
quantum
theory.
But
I have not
succeeded thus
far.
Best
regards,
yours sincerely,
A.

Highly
esteemed
Mr.
Federal
Councillor:
I
have
been
called
to
the
University
of Zurich
as
Extraordinary
Professor, and I have
accepted
this offer. Since I
must start
my job
in
Zurich
next semester
and
am
therefore
no
longer
able
to
lecture
at
the
University
of
Bern,
I
humbly
request
that
you
strike
my
name
from
the
list
of
Privatdozenten.
Respectfully,
Dr.
A.
Einstein
