the
assertion that
I lack
this
special
sixth
sense,
I also find
plausible.
It
is
good
that
he
does
not
simply
deny
that
I
can
think
at all.
As
long as
he does
not
deny
that
as
well,
I
will still
take
his
judgments
as
well-meaning.
What
he criticizes
you
for
is
completely
without
justification,
in
my
opinion.
An
equation
expressing
a
law
that
holds
only
for
the
case
of
rest
changes,
of
course,
its form
if
one
applies
the Lorentz transformation
to it.
Only
equations
that
are
already
valid for
arbitrary
velocities with
respect
to the
original system
must be invariant.
The
only thing
that
is
hypothetical
in
the
way you
treated the
matter
is,
in
my opinion,
your
summing
of
D
- E
over
the
different
kinds
of
molecules.[2] However,
the
argumentation
by means
of
the
equation
(Px
+
Ex)
=
-
-
(px
+
Ex)
is not valid.
But
on
the
other
hand, the
reference
to
Planck's
and
to
my
arguments
regarding
the electron
is
completely
valid.
I
like it
here
in
Zurich
very
much.
The head of
our
institute,
Prof.
Kleiner,[3]
is
certainly
no
great
physicist,
but
he
is
a
splendid
man
whom
I
enjoy very
much.
It
seems
that
scientific
distinction
and
personal
quality
do not
always go
hand
in
hand.
I value
a
harmonious
person
more
than
even
the craftiest formula
jockey or
deviser
of
experimental
designs.
Still,
you
should
consider
yourself
lucky
that
you
work
for
Lenard,[4]
the
more so
since,
as
it
seems, you
know how to
handle
him
very skillfully.
He
is
not
only a
skillful
master
of
his
craft but
also
a
real
genius.
I
am
very
interested
in
Born's
and
Herglotz's
most recent
investigations on
the
theory
of
relativity.[5]
It
really
seems
that
a
"rigid" body
with
6 degrees
of freedom
does
not
exist in
the
theory
of
relativity.[6]
I find
nothing
in
my
Salzburg[7]
lecture that
I
think
I could
not
vouch for.
Quite
a
few
things
are
not
treated
in sufficient
detail
and
are
not
sufficiently
well
grounded.
But
I
can
justify everything.
Just
go
ahead
and tell
me
frankly
your
doubts. For
me,
the
theory
of
quanta
is
a
settled
matter.
My
predictions regarding
the
specific
heats
are
apparently
being
brilliantly
confirmed.[8] Nernst,
who has
just
been here
to
see
me,
and
Rubens
are busily
engaged
in
the
experimental
verification,[9] so
that
we
will
soon
know
where
we
stand.
As for
the
quanta,
I have
already
discovered
something interesting,
but
still
nothing
final.
Things go
slowly,
partly
because
my
job
forces
me
to
grapple
thoroughly
with all
areas
of
physics.
But I find this
duty
an
extremely
pleasant
one.
I cannot
come
to
Heidelberg
now
because
I
have
neither the
time
nor
the
money
for
travel.

The
quarrel
between Stark
and
Sommerfeld
is
unedifying.[10]
Stark
has
once
again
produced
unadulterated
rubbish,
and Sommerfeld has
overestimated the
demonstrative
power
of the
phenomenon
at
issue;
nothing
sensible
ever comes
out
of
a
quarrel.
With
best
regards,
your
A.
Einstein
Greetings
from
my
wife
and
the little
one.
Give
my
best
regards
to
Hertz.[11]
