Student Petition
to
Retain Einstein
on
the
Faculty
of the
University
of Zurich
Zurich,
23
June
1910
To the
Department
of
Education,
Canton of Zurich
We hear that
Prof.
Einstein
has
been
proposed
for the
soon
to be
vacant professor-
ship
of theoretical
physics
at
the
University
of
Prague.[1]
The
undersigned
auditors of
Prof.
Einstein's lectures
request
you
herewith
to do
your
utmost
to
keep
this
outstanding
researcher
&
teacher
at
our university.
It
is
true
that the number of
us
students of theoretical
physics
at
this
university
is
small[2] &
we
appreciate
the
great
kindness the
government
has shown
us by
creating
the
position
of
Extraordinary
Professor of Theoretical
Physics.[3]
But
precisely
because
we
believe
that
Prof.
Einstein
is
more
qualified
than
anyone
else to
bring
great
renown
to
this
newly
created
discipline
at
our
university,
we
all feel
duty-bound
to
submit
this
petition.
Prof.
Einstein
has
an amazing
talent
for
presenting
the
most
difficult
problems
of
theoretical
physics
so
clearly
&
so
comprehensibly
that
it
is
a
great delight
for
us
to
follow his
lectures;[4]
and he
is
so
good
at
establishing a
perfect
contact with his
audience
that
we are
convinced
that
his
teaching
activity
would be
of
great advantage
to
our
university.
