Honored
Sir:
The
college
of
professors
of the
Philosophical Faculty
of
the
German
University
in
Prague proposed
you as
their
first choice
for the
chair
of theoretical
physics
that
remained
vacant at
the
above
university
after
Hofsrat
Lippich.[2]
For
my personal
information,
I
take the
liberty
of
asking you
in confidence
whether
you
would be
prepared to
accept
an
appointment to
this
chair,
starting
either
this
winter
semester
or
in
April
of the
next
year.[3]
While I
am
ready to
provide you
with
any
further information that
you might
desire
to
obtain
regarding
this
chair,
let
me
note for
the
present
that,
according
to
the
existing
provisions,
the standard
salary
for this
position
of
Ordinary
Professor
consists
of
a
basic
annual
salary
of
6,400 crowns,
which
is
increased
by
800
crowns
after
the fifth
and tenth
year
of
service,
by a
further
1,000
crowns
after
the
fifteenth and twentieth
year each,
and
by an
additional one-thousand two-hundred
crowns
after the
25th
year, up to
a
total of
11,200 crowns,
and
of
an
annual
supplementary
allowance
of
1,472 crowns;
in addition,
there
is
a
remuneration
for
seminar
exercises
amounting
to 800
crowns
annually.[4]
It
is
common knowledge
that
our university
professors
are
not
entitled
to
any
lecture
fees.
The
right to
a
pension is acquired
after
ten
years
of
service;
a
service
tax
of
1,933
crowns
has
to
be
paid
the
first
year
in service.
The chair
has
a
special
institute
at
its
disposal.[5]
In
case
you may
not
deem
it
most expedient to
come
here
for
a
discussion,
I would
politely
request
that
you
send
me your answer as
promptly
as possible,
if
you
please.
Yours
most
respectfully,
Dr. Max
