DECEMBER

317.
From Robert Gnehm
[Zurich]
8
December
1911
To
Professor Dr.
A.
Einstein,
Prague.
Highly
esteemed
Sir:
It
is
our
intention
to have
the chair that
has
been
vacant since the
resignation
of
Prof. Dr.
H.
Minkowski,
who has died in
the
meantime, filled
again by
the
start
of
the
next school
year (October
1912),
if
possible.[1]
We
seek
to
get
someone
who
is
qualified,
first
of
all,
to
supplement
the instruction
in
our
Department
VIII
(Department
for Teachers of Mathematics and
Physics) by
introducing
the advanced students
to
the
modern theories
in
the
field
of mathematical
physics.
Before
taking
further
steps
in this matter,
the
undersigned
would be
interested
to
learn
your
views
about the
planned
expansion
of
the curriculum
of
Department
VIII
and
about
the
filling
of
the
vacancy,
which would
best
be
done
in
a
person-to-person
discussion.
We
therefore take the
liberty
of
asking you
whether
you might
be
ready
to discuss
these
matters,
and if
so,
whether
you might
be
coming
to Switzerland in
the
near
future.
Otherwise,
the
undersigned
would
gladly pay you
a
visit for this
purpose
in
Prague (after
the New
Year).
We look
forward
to
your
reply
and
thank
you
in advance for
your
efforts.
Respectfully yours,
The Chairman of the
Swiss
School Council
Dr. R.
Gnehm
318.

Dear
Colleague:
I
would still like to know how
certain
it
is
that
you are going
to Zurich.[1]
You would
oblige me very
much
by answering
me
soon.[2]
With
cordial
greetings, yours faithfully,
H. A.
