To
Mileva
Marie[1]
Bern.
Saturday evening.
[28
June
1902
or
later][2]
My
little
Darling,
I
am
in
high spirits, having just
arrived
from
the Garden
with
Ehrat[3]
and
Solovini[4],
and
a
young
man
whom I know from
Schaffhausen
&
who
had
come
along to
Bern
just
in
order
to visit
me.[5]
Tomorrow I'm
going
to
the
Beatenberg
near
Thun[6]
with them,
&
they
will
be
leaving on Monday,
which suits
me
just
fine. I would much
rather
be
going
to
the
Beatenberg
with
you
than
with
a
bunch
of
men;
after
all,
I'm
a man
myself.
You
can't
imagine
how
tenderly
I
think of
you
whenever we're
not together,
even
though
I'm
always
such
a mean
fellow
when I'm
with
you.
But
just you
wait: next
Sunday,
or
the
Sunday
after
that,
we, too,
will
make
an
excursion,
and
we
will leave
already
on
Saturday
evening!
Then,
in
the
evening
and
at
night,
I will kiss
you
and
squeeze
you again
to
my
heart's desire. Ehrat
suffers
quite
a
lot
from his
bad
nerves,
even
though
he has
a
very
agreeable
life.
Imagine
if he
had
my job!
I
don't think
he would be able
to
stand
it
for
even
14
days.
He
should
really
have
a
sweetheart
like
I
do,
who'll
love him
and
bring
some
poetry
into
his
life,
so
he'll
realize
that
one can
have
a
life
that's
full
of
good
cheer
and
tender
feelings,
instead of
wearing
a
constant frown
upon
one's
face.
Goodbye my
sweetheart; we'll meet
Monday
at
6
o'clock at
the
tower.
Kisses from
your
Johonzel

October

My
dear
Hans,[2]
Thank
you very
much
for
your
two letters,
in which
you
so amusingly
criticize
yourself;
I will
dispel
all
that
when
you
come
to
see
me,
which will
take
place,
I hope,
8 days
from
Saturday.
We will have
a
pleasant time,
I
promise
you. My
landlady
has
a
marvelous
violin[3] and
Bern
has
a
beautiful
countryside,
and
I
am
in
a
cheerful,
light-
headed
mood,
because
my
worries
are now mostly gone, except
that
my
father
is
very ill,
unfortunately.[4]
I
am frightfully busy. Every day 8
hours
at the
office[5]
and
at
least
one
hour of
private
lessons,
&
then
in
addition, I do
some
scientific work.
That's
why
I
haven't
written
you
for
so
long.
Even between
1
and 2 at
midday
I'm
not
at home,
but
am
reading,
instead,
a
book
on
philosophy
with
a
friend.[6]
I find
your outpouring
of
self-knowledge very amusing.
What
wickedness could
you
possibly
have perpetrated-in
any
case,
whatever
it
is,
it
can'
shock
an
impenitent
sinner
like
me.
I
look
forward to
your
confession-but
watch out if
you
haven't done
something
