entitled "Zur
Ableitung
der Planck'schen
Strahlungsformel" ["On
the Derivation of
Planck's Radiation
Formula"][17]
and
contains the
proof
that the
system
of
electromag-
netic
resonators
introduced
by
Planck in his
latest
papers
form
a
kind
of canonical
ensemble
in
Gibbs's
sense.
The
second,
entitled "Ueber
allgemeine
statisch unbestimmte
Systeme"
["On
General
Statically
Undetermined
Systems"],[18]
solves
a
problem
of
applied
mechanics
in
a
very
general
and
clear
fashion.
Mr.
Frank
is
also
considered
an
excellent
lecturer.
His
papers
show
that
he
is at
the
same
time
a
capable
mathematician
and
extraordinarily knowledgeable
in
theoretical
physics,
and that
his
talents
are
singularly
versatile.
Emil Kohl.
Kohl's
scientific
qualities
have
already
been evaluated
in
detail
in
the
proposal regarding
the
succession to
Hofrat
Lippich's
chair.[19]
It
therefore suffices to
point
out
that Kohl
published
several additional
papers
since
that
time.
Special
mention
should be
made of
a
paper
on
Nernst's heat
theorem,[20]
which shows
that the author
has
retained
his
interest
in current
problems
of
physics.
Upon
careful examination of
the scientific
merits of
the
three researchers
mentioned,
the commission
arrived
at
the
view
that the achievements
of
the
two
first-mentioned
researchers
significantly
surpass
those of the third
one.
As
far
as
Paul
Ehrenfest and
Philipp
Frank
are
concerned, in view
of the different
nature
of their
talents,
the
commission
would
prefer not to
make
a
comparative
evaluation of their
scientific
qualifications.
Nonetheless,
the
commission
attaches
importance to
the
circumstance that
Frank
has
been
working
regularly
and
successfully as an
academic teacher
for
the
past
two
years,
while
Ehrenfest
has not
habilitated
to
this
day.
In view
of these
considerations,
the
undersigned
commission
asks
the
Ministry
of
Education
to
propose
the
following
candidates
for
the
succession to
the chair of
theoretical
physics
and
as
head of
the
seminar associated
with
it:
primo
loco Dr.
Philipp
Frank,
Privatdozent at
University
of
Vienna,
secundo loco
Dr.
Paul
Ehrenfest,
St. Petersburg,
tertio loco
Dr.
Emil
Kohl,
Privatdozent at
the
University
of Vienna.
