435. To
Marie Curie
Zurich, 3
April
[1913][1]
Highly
esteemed
Mrs. Curie:
A
few
days
have
passed
since the
wonderful
profusion
of
things
rushed
past
me.[2]
The
fibrils
of
my
brain
must
still be in terrible
disarray
from all
of
that.
But there
is
one
thing
that
I
do
feel
very clearly: I
am
deeply
grateful
to
you
and
your friends[3]
that
you
so cordially
allowed
me
to
participate
in
your daily
life.
To
witness such
marvelous
camaraderie of
such
people
is
the
most
uplifting thing
I
can
think
of.
Everything
looked
so
natural and
uncomplicated
with
you,
like
parts
of
a
good
work
of
art,
so
that
in
spite
of
my
rather
poor
knowledge
of
French,
the
feeling
of
being
a
stranger
did not arise in
me.
I wish
to
thank
you
with all
my
heart
for
the
time
you
devoted
to
us,[4]
and
to
ask
your
forgiveness
if
by any
chance
my
rough
manners
sometimes made
you
feel
uncomfortable.
But above
all,
I wish
you
and
your
children
good
health.[5]
As for the
little
mountain
excursion,[6]
I
will allow
myself
to
pester
you
about
it at
a
later
date,
when
the semester
nears
its
end.[7]
For
the time
being,
I
am
sending
you my
best
regards
and
once
again my
heartfelt thanks.
Yours,
A.
Einstein
Another
bit
of
physics!
Laue[8]
told
me
yesterday
that the three
Roentgen
photograms
of different
regular
crystals were
not,
after
all,
of
exactly
the
same
size.
If
this
proves to
be
true,
then the
weightiest objection against
the
theory
of
diffraction falls
by
the
wayside.
Laue
also told
me
that
the influence
of the orientation of the
crystal
is
far
greater
than
a
"reflection
theory"
or even a
"shaft
theory"
would demand.[9]
These
communications
are
of
course confidential;
I do not know to
what
extent
they represent
definitive results.

436. To
Elsa Löwenthal
[Zurich, 3 April 1913]
Dear
Elsa,
First,
....
claims
that
he sent
you
a
photograph,
which,[1]
however-did
not arrive.
Then the
Prague photographer
wrote
to me,
but the letter-did
not arrive. This
puts
an
end
to
my
credulousness.
I
am
telling you
this
to show
you
that I
am
not
to
blame
for
this
unfortunate
delay.
I have
now
written
again
to
the
photographer (Langhans, Prague,
next to
Wenzelsplatz)
that
he
is to
make
2 photographs immediately
and
send them
to
you.[2]
