DOCS. 449-451 JULY

449.
To
Arthur Schidlof
Esteemed
Colleague:
SS'
[Brunnen, 5 July 1913]
Unfortunately,
I
cannot
accept your new
derivation
either.[1]
For
there
does
not
exist
any
kind
of
thermodynamic equilibrium
between
1
and
2 if
the radiation densities
in
1
&
2
are
different.
For that
reason
it
is
impossible
to
carry
out
(reversibly)
the virtual
displacement
conceived
by you.
Respectfully yours,
A.
Einstein
450. To
Conrad Habicht
[Zurich,
7
July 1913]
Dear
Konrad,
By
the
same
mail
the book
by
Gr.. I could not
get
hold
of the
A.
Gr.[1]
It
is
handed
out
only by F.[2] himself,
so
I
do
not
know
of
any way
to
obtain
it.
With
best
wishes,
your
A. E.
451.
To
Elsa Löwenthal
[Zurich,
14?
July
1913][1]
Dear
Elsa,
I have
not
yet
answered
your
letter. But
in its
place
I will
now
tell
you
some
really
good
news.
A
few
days ago
I
was
visited
by
Planck
and
Nernst, who
insisted
on coming
from
Berlin for the
sole
purpose
of
offering
me a
position at
the
Academy.[2]
Thus,
next
spring
at
the
latest,
I'll
come
to
Berlin
for
good.
It
is
a
colossal
honor that has
thus
been
bestowed
upon me,
since I will
become Vant Hoff's
successor.[3]
I
already rejoice
at
the
pleasant
times
we
will
spend together!
But don't
tell
a
soul
a
thing
about the
matter.
A
decision
of
the
plenum
of
the
Academy is
still
needed,[4]
and
it would look
bad
if
something
were
to
become
public knowledge.
Kisses from
your
Albert
Cordial
greetings to
Uncle
and
Aunt.[5]
